What does a comprehensive eye exam include?
A comprehensive eye exam goes beyond checking for changes in your vision. It involves a thorough evaluation of your eye health, including tests for visual acuity, refraction (to determine your glasses or contact prescription), eye alignment, and a detailed assessment for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. For more details, visit the American Optometric Association.

Does insurance cover eye exams?
We accept most vision insurance plans, but coverage varies depending on your provider. Typically, vision insurance plans do not cover refraction tests (which measure your prescription for glasses or contacts) or retinal imaging (used to screen for eye diseases like cancer). We recommend confirming your coverage when you call to schedule your appointment.

What is a diabetic eye exam?
A diabetic eye exam is a specialized comprehensive exam designed to detect eye problems commonly caused by diabetes, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic macular edema. We recommend regular diabetic eye exams to maintain eye health and prevent potential vision loss.

What is dry eye syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes produce poor-quality or inadequate tears. This lack of lubrication can cause discomfort, inflammation, and eye surface damage. We offer various treatments, including prescription medications and innovative therapies like IPL, to help manage and relieve dry eye symptoms.

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions involving fluid build up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid can damage the optic nerve by increasing the pressure inside the eye. If not treated promptly, it is a leading cause of blindness. To learn more about glaucoma, visit the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
-
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurry or hazy vision, and duller colors. Cataracts typically develop with age and can only be corrected through surgery. We have three surgical centers in Central Alabama where Dr. Young Choi performs cataract surgery in-office, eliminating the need for a hospital visit.

At what age should children start receiving yearly eye exams?
The American Optometric Association recommends children get their first eye exam between the ages of 6 and 12 months. After that, a comprehensive exam should be done at least once between ages 3 and 5, followed by annual exams for children ages 6 to 17. Regular eye exams can help detect and address any vision issues early on.
